Welcome to this month’s painting lesson! I’m so happy to share this elegant painting exercise and botanical study with you, exploring the Lotus Seed Capsule in realistic watercolour. This course is a gentle but fun and practical deep dive painting lesson into colour, texture, and technique, allowing us to slow down and truly enjoy the process of painting nature with intention.
In this lesson, we’ll explore two lotus seed capsules at different stages of their life cycle, using a simple yet expressive composition that offers enormous creative flexibility. You can paint one capsule, both, or even combine this study with the Little Kingfisher lesson to expand your compositional thinking even further. This subject invites play, curiosity, and personal storytelling, making it a beautiful opportunity to stretch your skills while still feeling supported.
With a strong focus on technique, we combine wash, glazing, dry brushing, and a little masking fluid use in this lesson, to help you create a wonderful outcome. Observing the shifts in colour, structure, and character as the seed capsule ages is always fascinating, and it gives us rich visual information to play with from reference to paper in a practical, achievable way.
Together, we’ll work through delicate pollen features, deconstruct the fabulous tangle and complexity of the stamens, evolving seed pods, and connective stems, learning how to balance detail with looseness and control with freedom.
