My newest painting, Scarlet Honeyeater and Mistletoe is another in my small Australian birds collection, capturing beautiful moments in time from my home environment.This wonderous subject reference comes with thanks to Phillip Start, who generously lets me work from his images when I fail to capture it myself… its a real dedication, and certainly i love working with him to grow snapshots into more involved finished pieces of beautiful art.
The Scarlet Honeyeater is one of my favourite small Australian birds, for obvious reasons! These tiny, scarlet red birds are a memorable sight indeed, and I am really thrilled to be including it in this series of miniature watercolour bird studies.
I adore the subject, the colour, atmosphere and flow of this piece, the soft sage greens with the harmonious lime green amongst the leaves, the oranges of the mistletoe flowers hanging in all their overlooked beauty and the way the colours of the bird and surroundings compliment each other seems so satisfying, calming and thrilling to me all at once.
