Welcome to this months painting lesson online, ready now for you to enjoy! I’m so pleased to share a beautiful new bird study with you, capturing the Little Kingfisher in realistic watercolour. This lesson is a rich exploration of technique, texture, and timing, using a simple but striking blue palette to create a painting full of impact, beauty, life and character. While we’ve painted kingfishers before, each variety brings its own unique balances and important learning opportunities to our table…. and lets be real. We simply cant have too many kingfishers to explore, and this one is just gorgeous!
With a strong focus on watercolour techniques, timing, brush control, layers and texture, this lesson offers a practical step-by-step approach, helping you break down a complex subject into achievable, bite size pieces and tasks, with real learning at every stage. Opening the magical world of realistic watercolour painting and bird illustration to you, and all the possibilities of this wonderful medium with it, were all about the learning, exploration of subject and medium, expanding your knowledge and confidence with every practice.
Together, we’ll work through the expressive eye and beak, bold blue head, textured wings (our real focal challenge in this study), and delicate finishing details, using watercolour’s natural qualities to build form, intensity, and subtlety.
