LEMON STUDY LESSON – Online Painting Tutorial In Watercolour
Welcome to this month’s painting lesson! I’m delighted to share this fresh, vibrant, and joyful realistic watercolour study with you, as we explore the beautiful Lemon in all its colour, texture, and character. This course is a fun, practical, and technique-rich painting lesson that offers plenty of room to play, experiment, and grow, while still feeling supported every step of the way.
In this lesson, we’ll work through a complete lemon composition, including leaf, fruit, stem, and flower, using a clear, achievable process that builds confidence and understanding of the medium. The lemon is a wonderfully forgiving subject, making it ideal for learning, refining, and enjoying realistic watercolour techniques without pressure. Its bold colour, tactile surface, and simple structure allow us to focus on how watercolor behaves, rather than over-controlling the outcome.
Although we bring together all of my core techniques and processes to capture this subject realistically, our key focus throughout this lesson is learning when to stop. By prioritising lifting techniques over masking fluid, we develop better wash application, improved timing, and greater confidence in handling the medium. This shift opens the door to more vibrant, luminous, and workable paintings.
Together, we’ll work through layering, glazing, dry brushing, and delicate refinement, learning how tone creates form and how restraint enhances clarity. From the playful exploration of colour in the leaf, through to the vibrant lemon fruit and the soft, delicate flowers, each stage builds on the last in a logical, gentle progression. This is a thoughtfully paced, step-by-step lesson designed to strengthen your realistic watercolour foundations while keeping the process enjoyable and accessible.
By the end of the course, you’ll not only have created a beautiful lemon painting of your own, but you’ll also walk away with a deeper understanding of wash control, timing, and how to let watercolour work with you — not against you.
